According to reports from the BLS, over 40% of burglaries exclude forced entries; meaning, burglars gain entry through unlocked doors and windows. Or perhaps it’s the type of lock that most homeowners use to secure the doors.

Most of these locks, especially those on the older model homes,
are not that durable and burglars find them easy to manipulate. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) highlights different grades of door locks, three to be exact, to help identify the durability and quality of deadbolts and locksets.

With Grade 1 being the superior choice for outdoor residential locks, each lock must pass security and operational tests such as door strikes, cycles, and weight test. Below are locks that are very durable, and will do great justice to your home’s security.

Deadbolts

These types of locks provide enhanced security on residential doors, much more than other locks. The term “dead” means the locks do not contain springs. A double-cylinder deadbolt operates with a key on both sides of the door, and a single-cylinder operates with a key from the outside, plus with a turn of a button on the inside.

Double-cylinders can pose a problem during an emergency if the key is not readily available or missing. Examples of double and single cylinder deadbolts are:

  • Kwikset with SmartKey Double Cylinder Deadbolt

this lock is available at local home locksmith stores or online at places such as Amazon. It is classified as ANSI Grade 1 and has fully adjustable deadbolt and latch to fill all standard doors.

  • Baldwin 380 RDB

this is a single deadbolt lock, classed as ANSI Grade 2. It features solid zinc and can be paired with several door knobs.

Entry Locksets / Handle-sets

Handle-sets and Locksets are often paired with deadbolts and used at medium entry security entrances.
They can be locked from the inside and out, and have two doorknobs. Handle-sets often feature decorative door handles on the outside.

An example is the Kwikset Combo. This lockset features are Smartkey Juno Know with a Double Cylinder Deadbolt.
It has two locking points (a deadbolt and keyed entry), and features a fully adjustable double cylinder and latch, plus a smartkey re-key system.

It’s available through online merchants or at local home locksmith or hardware stores
